About St. Teresa Catholic Church.

A Happy Catholic Family of Faith, Hope, and Love.

We are a vibrant and welcoming happy family in the Archdiocese of Benin City. Guided by the Holy Spirit and inspired by our patron Saint (St. Teresa of Avila) to: Worship God in prayer, Proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to all, Love and care for our neighbours (especially the poor and vulnerable amongst us) and to Build a strong, Christ-centered community where everyone is welcome to belong.

Church History

St. Teresa Catholic Church Benin CIty was established in 1979 as a mass centre, carved out from Holy Cross Cathedral. It is the 3rd oldest Parish in the Archdiocese of Benin City.
It started out as a Basic Christian Community made up of different catholic faithful families.
The Basic Christian Community led by Sir Iseghohi approached Sir D. P. Lawani for a piece of land adjacent to his house and he obliged them. On this land they built a batcher for worship and met with the late Archbishop, Patrick Ekpu who assigned Late Msgr. J. P. Omesa to come celebrate Sunday masses for the Basic Christian Community.

The parish grew rapidly warranting the Archbishop to assign the out station to SMA Priests (Rev. Fr. Donovan, Rev Fr. Boyle and Rev Fr. Cusack). The Parish was then under the pastoral care of the SMA Priests until 1985 when Late Msgr. F.O. Omede was posted to the Parish as the first Diocesan Priest.

Closely working with the Priests then were Catechist Livinus Ekujuru and Choirmaster Ayobahan (the first catechist and choirmaster of the church) who nurtured the liturgical functionaries respectively.

Pictures of Past Parish Priests

Through the tireless efforts of the Priests that handled the Pastoral care of the Parish, the Parish was able to establish Mass centres which include: St. Jude Mass Centre, Iwogban, Benin City, St. Patrick Catholic Church, Ehor, amongst many others. In the early 1990s, St. Jude Mass centre became a Parish and St. Patrick Catholic Church Ehor was also elevated to the Status of a Parish. The latter took over other Mass Centres. Thus, St. Teresa Parish was relieved of the responsibilities of Outstations.

As the parish grew, the batcher metamorphosed into a block building, and as the need to have the main church building arose, all hands were put on deck, and to the glory of God, the main church building was completed and first dedicated on November 3, 2001 by late Archbishop Patrick. E. Ekpu.
Having undergone significant re-modelling, it was rededicated on 11th October 2025 by His Grace, Most Rev Dr. Augustine O. Akubeze, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Benin City, which also marked 46 solid years of its creation.
